The Story of Roses                                                                                华文版

- Rose, the symbol of “Love”. Rose is the colour of the love. Rose is the flower of love.

- The majority of roses seen on the market belong to rose family. The origin of roses is in Northern Hemisphere, which spreads from Asia to North America, and it was cultivated as early as Han dynasty in China. –

- Rose is an evergreen or half evergreen bush. The height of roses varies in different assortments, from several centimeters to several meters; the stem also has many varieties. Some are upright; some are tendril and even with thorn. In recent years, experts cultivated out some new sorts of roses with less thorn or thorn-free, but only has few varieties.

- According to the records of some classic books, the rhizome of roses can be cooked, and the root can be used to make wine. Ancient times, in Western Regions of China, ‘Rose Dew’ was very popular, which can be used to mix powder to make cosmetics for woman. If you spray it on clothes, it is said that its fragrance can last for a very long time.

- Molecular biologists, who use DNA molecules to estimate age, can trace roses back some 200 million years! The legends take root … Chloris, the Greek goddess of flowers, crowned the rose as queen of the flowers. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, presented a rose to her son Eros, god of love. The rose became a symbol of love and desire. Eros gave the rose to Harpocrates, the god of silence, to induce him not to gossip about his mother’s amorous indiscretions. Thus, the rose also became the emblem of silence and secrecy.

- In the middle ages, rose was suspended from the ceiling of a council chamber, pledging all present to secrecy, or sub Rose, “under the rose”.

- In Great Britain, Queen Victoria Period’s architecture, the vaults of the hall was decorated by caved roses. The religious architecture in the 16th century, for instance, the confessional room in Rome Catholic Church was decorated with roses pattern, too.

玫 瑰 的 故 事

- 玫瑰, 象征著[爱情]. 玫瑰是爱情的颜色.

- 绝大多数市面上所见的 [玫瑰] 都是属於蔷薇科, 原产地在北半球的亚洲及美洲至北美洲, 且早自汉朝即有栽培. 玫瑰为常绿 或半常绿灌木. 株高因品种的差异, 有矮至数公分者, 也有高达数公尺者; 茎也因品种之不同而有很大的差异. 有直立的, 也有藤蔓性的, 还带刺. 近年来, 专家有栽培出少刺或无刺的玫瑰, 然而品种不多

- 根据古籍的记载, 玫瑰的根茎可煮来吃, 根可用来酿酒. 在古代西域, 还很盛行 ‘玫 瑰露’, 能调粉制成女子的化妆品. 如果洒在衣服上, 据说其香气能持久, 经年不消呢!

- 罗马时代, 玫瑰花是上流社会的玩赏花, 象徵 ‘胜利’, 因此人们经常用它做成花冠和香水 或以玫瑰花瓣浮於酒杯中做为点缀来庆祝宴会. 在罗马神话里, 玫瑰是象徵 ‘秘密’的花, 爱神邱比特为了替母亲保密恋情, 而将维纳斯所送的玫瑰花拿来贿赂缄默之神Harpocrates, 请他保守秘密. 因此, 罗马人之秘密相告, 就用玫瑰来示意, 称为 Sub Rose ( 即Under the rose).

- 在英女皇维多利雅晚期的建筑物, 大庭上方的弓型天盖也刻饰有玫瑰花. 16 世纪的宗教建筑物上, 如罗马教会的忏悔室等也取用玫瑰花来装饰.

- 到现在, 玫瑰仍持续散发著魅力 ……
